Corrugated boxes are something that can be everywhere, it has become pervasive in every industry wherever there is a need to pack, ship or contain things. The objects they can be packed with varies from industry to industry. These boxes are engineered with fiberboard and designed to withstand the pressure and weight of the contained materials.
These corrugated boxes are used for shipping all kind of contents and that is why they face a lot of wear and tear from getting moved from one place to another. Also, they are stacked high in the warehouses where they should be sturdy and durable enough to withstand the vertical pressure.
Corrugated box manufacturers noticed that usually carrying around a box used to difficult as there was no structure which could be held, so they made hand holes in the corrugated boxes. One might think that these hand holes are just cut out from the boxes, but that is not true otherwise they will weaken the entire box and will lead to breakage or damage of the box.
Things to consider while making hand holes
one should keep in mind that paperboard should be strong enough even after the hand holes are cut out of it, so to keep the box strong usually two or three boards are used instead of one board for manufacturing the box.
- Style of the box
boxes come in different size and style, so one should be careful about where to place the hole so that the base of the box should not give in.
- Shape and size of the hole
as when the hole is cut out of the board it weakens the board, one should be careful about the ergonomics so that it can hold the contents. And it should also complement the functionality of the box.
the box should be reinforced as a safety measure so that even if the board weaken due to hand holes the safety material will keep the box together. Some of the common reinforcement material are filament tape and plastic inserts.
Hand holes are not just something that is cut out of the box, it is engineered keeping in mind several things about the functionality and usage of the box.
